Philippine Coucal

The Philippine Coucal is a bird endemic in the Philippines. It belongs to the family of cuculidae or cuckoos and its scientific name is centrupos viridis. Its habitats are grasslands, mixed cultivations, second growth forest, and forest up to 2000 meters above sea level. In Iloilo it is called Saguksok.

This bird often go near our house but every time I sneak to get a picture of it, it flies away. This picture is the clearest among my attempts. This was taken on a rainy morning of January 3, 2014

Around late January, we saw a baby bird crossing the road, which we almost run over. We picked it up for fear that it will get run over by another car that will pass by. We were very surprised how friendly and domesticated this bird seemed. It would comfortably perch on your shoulder w/o any fear of people. After some research in the net, it was apparently a Philippine Coucal. The description I was reading was that this was a very shy bird and would fly away the moment it sees someone approach. This bird is the exact opposite, it sees complete protection from Humans and would perch in any area of your body it can latch to. We've already had it for a few months and has been regarded as a family pet. We can bring it anywhere, even inside a mall, just perching on our shoulder. It's not even tied nor will try to fly away.

The Philippine Coucal is really a very shy bird but maybe because you were with it since it was young, it considered you already as a friend.
