I am researching on where to submit my short stories and in the process I have ranked them with regards to their rates. It is just impossible for me to rank them according to reputation.

Since submission guidelines may change, I have not added descriptions of the publications; instead I added hyperlinks to the publications’ websites.

Publications have different paying rates: flat rate, per page rate, and per word rate; so, I have arranged my list like that also.

With that here is my list:

The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, The Atlantic, and Granta have not divulged their rates in their websites but I believe that they are among the highest paying market.


FLAT RATE:

1.       LitMag                                                   
Payment: Prose, $1000 for print and $250 for online; poetry, $250
Reading fee: $3, $20 for contest

2.       The Paris Review                                                
Payment: $1,000 to 3,000
Reading fee: No

3.       Subtropics                                                            
Payment: Stories and Essays, $1,000 ($500 for a short short); Poetry, $100
Reading fee: $3

4.       Virginia Quarterly Review                                
Payment: Prose, $1,000 and above; Poetry, $200 to $1,000
Reading fee: Varies

5.       Glimmer Train                                     
Payment: $700 to 3000
Reading fee: Varies


PER PAGE RATE:

1.       Georgia Review                                   
Payment: Prose, $50 per printed page; Poetry $4 per line

2.       The Grain Magazine(Canada)            
Payment: $50 per page to a maximum of $250, plus 3 copies of the issue in which their work appears
Reading fee: No

3.       Fiddlehead(Canada)                                           
Payment: Copies, $60 CAD per page
Reading fee: No

4.       Ploughshares                                       
Payment: Copies, subscription, $45 per printed page, $90 minimum per title, $450 maximum per author

Payment: 10¢ per word for the first 5000 words, 8¢ for each word over 5000
Reading fee: No

3.       Analog Science Fiction
Payment: 8 to 10 cents per word for short fiction (up to approximately 20,000 words),
6 cents per word for serials (40,000-80,000 words),
9 cents per word for fact articles, and
$1 per line for poetry,
$1,200.00 for color cover art.
$125.00 for black and white interiors.

Payment: Fiction, 8 to 10¢ per word; Poetry,$1 per line

5.       Iowa Review
Payment: Prose, 8¢ per word ($100 minimum); Poetry, $1.50 per line ($40 minimum)
